Why do we need to know about mobile web sites?
Whilst smartphone sales overtake that of the PC we are continuously reminded that
there is a huge, unsaturated market ready to be tapped into. What ever your business
you can enter this market, simply by going mobile.
A recent event in London 'Think Mobile' brought together around 400 delegates and an audience of over 95,000 viewers streaming live from their mobiles and desktops.
Google UK’s Ian Carrington provided a valuable insight and exciting revelations to the pace at which the mobile market is developing.
Last week BBC News stated that approximately 1/3 of adults in the UK now own a smartphone and recent research has revealed that a high proportion of them would suggest that they are ‘addicted’ to their smartphone. Google revealed some of the typical user habits including:
Ebay are a great example of the few businesses taking advantage of this market by becoming mobile optimised. Ian Carrington states "They’re having a sale on a mobile device every single second, and they’re doing over $2bn worth of revenue in a year on mobile".
Only 17% of advertisers have a mobile website, which means that there is a huge gap in the market and an unmissable opportunity to make your business stand out. Not having a mobile friendly website, as stated by Google "is the single largest barrier between you and the mobile user".
A regular website is viewed through a mobile lense which means that viewers will either have to zoom in or out to gain focus and then scroll around a site to find the information they want. This does not make for a quality user experience and can cause potential customers to move on quickly.
Any business can benefit from going mobile, but here’s a short example of the possibilities within retail.
